Reading for pleasure

The Importance of Parents Developing a Love for Reading in Their Children

Reading is a gateway to knowledge, creativity, and critical thinking. When parents foster a love for reading in their children, they set the stage for lifelong learning and success.

1. Cognitive Development: Reading enhances vocabulary, comprehension, and cognitive skills, helping children excel academically.

2. Emotional Growth: Stories teach empathy and emotional intelligence, essential for strong interpersonal skills.

3. Parent-Child Bonding: Reading together strengthens the emotional connection and creates cherished memories.

4. Imagination and Creativity: Books spark imagination and innovative thinking, valuable for problem-solving.

5. Lifelong Learning: A love for reading encourages continuous learning and personal growth.

Tips for Parents:

  • Read Aloud Daily: Make reading a daily habit with engaging books.
  • Create a Reading Space: Ensure books are accessible and create a cozy reading nook.
  • Be a Role Model: Let your child see you reading and share your favourite books.
  • Visit Libraries and Bookstores: Make reading an adventure by exploring new books together. Ceredigion Library
  • Discuss Stories: Engage in conversations about the books you read to deepen understanding.

By nurturing a love for reading, parents give their children a lifelong gift of knowledge and imagination. Let’s make reading a joyful part of every child’s life.

Support from the school:

• In earlier stages, high frequency letter sounds and words are sent home with the parents to enable them to support their child in learning the mechanics of restarting.

• Later reading books of increasing difficulty are sent home together with a reading record for you to enter when you have read with your child.

• Pupils are given opportunities to choose library books from a varied selection of books, these may be too difficult or too easy for your children, but we encourage you to read as a family so that they have the pleasure of enjoying books.

• In addition, we offer access to online resources such as apps and Websites.

• We offer additional reading sessions for pupils who need a boost with their reading, or for pupils who find it difficult to develop their skills due to additional learning needs.
